Loyola Marymount University: Case Study

As a small to medium sized private campus, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) provides parking for around 9,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors. With not all

parking on campus being located in equally central areas, we naturally see certain parking regions occupied at much higher rates than others, many of which experience longer turnover times and greater noncompliance. Fortunately, a company founded by recent graduates of LMU came to our department just under a year ago after developing innovative fixed-LPR technology that goes beyond simply reading license plates.

LMU has since partnered with this company, Automotus, for a fixed LPR solution in lots/locations that have timed parking spaces. Through integration with T2 Flex, our unified system, LMU shares permit & vehicle information with Automotus to issue citations by email to drivers with a customer email relationship in Flex. Drivers receive email notifications with time-stamped photo evidence of violations informing them that they have been cited for a violation.

 

If there is no email relationship for the customer/vehicle, parking staff receive an automated notification to enforce by writing a violation with the T2 Mobile Enforcement App. LMU also shares an active scofflaw list with Automotus to alert parking staff of vehicles eligible for tow.

 

 

Beyond enforcement, this fixed-LPR technology has also enabled us to capture a wide range of data, from traffic and park counting to occupancy rates and number of vehicles that pass a vacant spot (useful in determining what percentage of vehicles are searching for parking).

 

Since launching beta testing in Spring 2018, this system has caught over five times more violations than our mobile LPR system, while also collecting valuable data. We are going fully live in Fall of 2018 and expect a continued positive impact on compliance, efficient spot turnover, additional revenue, and analytics useful in guiding decision-making. At LMU, we’re very excited about our future with this technology.
